Differences between E-Readers and Tablets

You’re in the hunt for either an E-Reader or a Tablet! Welcome to the best page to decide which one is right for you. Now, you can read books on the tablets, but the tablets can do a lot more. With those extra functions, you pay more. So if you just want to read on the plane, grab an E-Reader. However, if you want to watch your favorite TV show or movie, or even play a few of your favorite games, and read, then go with the a tablet.

Now, the leaders in the E-Reader category would be the Kindle (3G and Touch) and the Nook Color. The leaders in the tablet category would be the iPad and the Kindle Fire. There are a couple more options for each that I will mention, but only to provide a more broad review.

Type Description Shipping Cost
Kindle Keyboard 3G 3G coverage, low cost of books, thin and light, easy to read, holds 3,500 books, and a great price. However, with the Kindle 3G touch for a bit more, it is an easy choice to upgrade for many. Free $139.00
Kindle Touch 3G Nearly the same as the Kindle 3G except touch screen for ease of use. Everyone is using touch screens for cell phones, because they are a lot easier and more fun to use. Free $149.00
Apple iPad 2 Light, easy to use, tons of apps, good battery life, and excellent for reading or watching movies. A bit pricier than the Fire, but read below for more details. Free $500.00+
Kindle Fire With a killer price, this is one of the hottest sellers today. With Wi-fi, ease of use with a touch screen, millions of books, movies, shows, and cloud storage, it is popular for good reason. Tax: $199.00
These prices are as up-to-date as we have time to do so. However, clicking the links in the “Type” column will allow you to see the current prices and options available by taking you to Amazon. You can then customize your internet capabilities, storage, or recieve special offers, and how all these affect the price.

Kindle vs Nook

he Kindle and the Nook Color are the two clear leaders on the market today for E-Readers. However, there still is the decision of which one to buy? We will break it down into easy categories for you to digest including – Ease of Use – Readability – Internet Use – Battery Life – and Overall Opinion.

Reading – Kindle vs Nook

If you are looking at either the Kindle or Nook, then are your main goal is to use it for reading. The Kindle wins hands down because of the increased contrast of the letters and the screen caused by E-Ink Technology. This makes it very easy to read for hours on end, as the Kindle also has a much longer battery life.

Winner: Kindle

Connection & Book Sharing

Kindle-vs-nookSo you want to surf the web while you use your e-reader?  Did you even know you can share / lend books to other people?  These are some of the cool features that these e-readers offer you.  With the Kindle, a lot of books can be lent to your friends for 14 days.  Also, you can access your libraries books as well.

The Nook comes with Wifi capabilities as well, so you can search the internet with both of these in a hot spot. However, Amazon pays for 3G internet for life for a one time fee. This makes surfing the web hard, but possible. However, you can easily download books nearly anywhere in the world with the 3G connection.

Winner: Kindle 3G

Outdoor Reading and Reading in the Dark

Do you plan on reading outside in the sun or reading in the dark a lot? This is where it gets a bit complicated, so pay attention!

Reading in the Dark:

The Nook Color is the winner for reading in the dark because of how the Nook and Kindle screens are displayed. The Kindle uses E-Ink technology which makes it similar to reading on paper. It would be similar to reading off your cell phone (Nook) vs off a newspaper (Kindle) in the dark. How do you read in the dark with a Kindle then? You buy a Kindle cover with a light.

Reading Outdoors:

Plan on taking this with you to the beach or maybe sitting outside in your hammock? Just like we compared them above, the Nook is similar to reading off your cell phone… and doing that in the sun, you are bending every which way with your hand over it to block out the sun. Since the Kindle’s E-Ink technology is like reading off paper, it wins hands down for outdoor reading.

Reading in the Dark Winner: Nook Color or Kindle Fire
Outdoor Reading Winner: Kindle Touch

Kindle Review and Nook Review – A Clear E-Reader Winner?

Do we have a clear winner for the best e-reader? In most of the categories, the Kindle won out. We feel very confident that if you go with the Kindle Touch 3G, you will not be disappointed. The prices range from as little as $79 for the basic Kindle to $149 for the Kindle Touch with 3G. Also, make sure you look closely at the special offers/ads that the Kindle will display unless you pay a bit more.
